4-Ply Mat Colors

Each mat color offers conservation-level art protection throughout its surface, core and backing.

8-Ply Mats

The mat opening is cut on an angle, creating a beveled edge around the inside. The thickness of the mat board, or ply, determines the size of that beveled edge. Standard mats are 4-ply, and we offer a thicker, 8-ply mat in select colors for a more refined and elevated look.

Float Types

Sandwich Float

To reveal the edges of your artwork, you can float it on top of the mat. Change the Float Margin to adjust the amount of matting shown on each side. The artwork will be pressed between the glaze and the matting (hence the "sandwich").

If you are framing at home, the matting will arrive with pre-configured, double-sided tape strips to help you position the art.

Elevated Float Mount

Spacers inside the frame create a 1/4" air gap between the matting and glaze, and your artwork floats 1/8" above the mat on an archival foamboard lift. This creates a dramatic shadow around the edges and creates the illusion that your artwork is literally floating.

When we frame for you in our studio, we'll dry-mount your piece so that it lies perfectly flat and smooth (this will not damage your artwork, but cannot be reversed). When framing at home, the pre-installed lift comes with double-sided tape strips to help you position the art and secure it in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can framed collage photos be removed or replaced? +

We use premium materials to help preserve your photos and keep them looking their best. When you upload digital images for us to print and frame, we drymount the prints for perfect flatness and seal them inside the frame with a paper dust cover. Swapping or replacing the photos is not recommended without professional assistance.

Note that if you want to frame prints or other items you already have on hand, use our custom collage builder and select "Arworks on Paper" from the dropdown menu. These frames do have an open back and allow you to remove or replace items at any time.

Can I order an empty collage frame for photos or art prints I already have? +

Yes! When you upload images that appear inside the collage frame, we will print and frame them for you. If instead you'd like to design a collage frame to fit items you already have, use our custom collage builder and select "Artwork on Paper". We'll send you the empty frame with instructions for mounting everything at home. These frames are designed so that you easily reverse the steps to remove or replace items at any time.

How many photos can I include in a collage frame? +

It depends on the design of the frame. Some of our most popular collage frame styles highlight two to three photos, while others showcase up to 24 pics. Choose a collage layout to capture the story you want to tell, or use our custom collage builder to design a frame with up to 30 photos!

What are the different ways I can customize my collage frame? +

After you've decided on a layout and uploaded the photos, there a number of ways you can customize your collage frame. First, we have a variety of Frame Styles, from gallery to rustic to modern, that you can preview to find the finish and width you like best. You can then adjust the size of the matting around your images as well as the mat color. Our most popular mat colors are white and black, but additional colors (as well as 8-ply mats) can be found inside the Advanced Options section. You can even select paper type from Photo Paper Lustre Finish, Archival Matte Art Paper and Textured Watercolor. Click/tap the "i" icon next to Paper Type to see a description of each.
