4-Ply Mat Colors
Each mat color offers conservation-level art protection throughout its surface, core and backing.
8-Ply Mats
The mat opening is cut on an angle, creating a beveled edge around the inside. The thickness of the mat board, or ply, determines the size of that beveled edge. Standard mats are 4-ply, and we offer a thicker, 8-ply mat in select colors for a more refined and elevated look.

Sandwich Float To reveal the edges of your artwork, you can float it on top of the mat. Change the Float Margin to adjust the amount of matting shown on each side. The artwork will be pressed between the glaze and the matting (hence the "sandwich"). If you are framing at home, the matting will arrive with pre-configured, double-sided tape strips to help you position the art. |

Elevated Float Mount Spacers inside the frame create a 1/4" air gap between the matting and glaze, and your artwork floats 1/8" above the mat on an archival foamboard lift. This creates a dramatic shadow around the edges and creates the illusion that your artwork is literally floating. When we frame for you in our studio, we'll dry-mount your piece so that it lies perfectly flat and smooth (this will not damage your artwork, but cannot be reversed). When framing at home, the pre-installed lift comes with double-sided tape strips to help you position the art and secure it in place. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Can framed photos be removed or replaced? +
We use premium materials to help preserve your photo and keep it looking its best. Each print is drymounted for perfect flatness, and sealed inside the frame with a paper dust cover for protection. Swapping or replacing the photo is not recommended without professional assistance.
What size should I choose for my framed photo? +
Once you've uploaded a digital image, we'll provide a range of print sizes based on the resolution of the file. Right beneath those size options, expanding the More Options (+) allows you to enter a custom print size, crop your photo, convert it to black & white, or boost its resolution to unlock larger sizes. You can also select the paper type between Photo Paper Lustre Finish, Archival Matte Art Paper and Textured Watercolor.
The right print size depends on your space and the impact you want to make. Smaller sizes work well for shelves and gallery walls, while larger frames can make a statement on their own. Note that the overall size of the frame (the outer dimensions) will be different than your print size, and will depend on the frame and mat width you select. We'll display the outer dimensions of the frame as you customize, and have a handy View in Room tool that lets you preview different sizes on the wall to find the perfect fit.
How do I choose the right frame and mat style? +
After you've uploaded your photo and selected a print size, use our frame visualizer to try out different profile colors. Adding a mat creates breathing room around your photo and draws in the eye. You can adjust the mat width to see what looks good, or click/tap our Golden Ratio button next to the slider for a visually balanced look. Expand the Advanced Options section for more customization options such as additional mat colors, 8-ply mats, bottom weighting, and float mounting.
Our general advice is to try different styles and trust your eye, landing on the frame and mat combination that best complements your photo. You can also use the Share button to send a preview of the frame to a friend for a second opinion, or reach out to us at any time for a recommendation.
Do you have any matting options besides black and white? +
Open the Advanced Options section for additional mat colors as well as 8-ply options. You can also adjust the width of the mat on any side.
Can these framed photos be stand on a table or shelf? +
No. Our framed photos are designed to hang on the wall, and will arrive with a wire or corner brackets on the back for hanging. However, if the outer dimensions of your frame are smaller than 11"x14", you can add an EaselMate Stand to your order by adding it your cart with this link.
Separately, we have a line of Tabletop framed photos that come in a single size (a 9" x 11" frame) and in limited profile colors. These will stand on tables and shelves with a built-in stand.
