Interior design trends are constantly rising and falling in popularity, as new styles emerge and drive decor choices.
The popularity of each trend can vary greatly, with many resurgent after initial spikes and dips in consumer interest, but the pattern remains consistent. Each trend has a shelf life.
With that in mind, we’ve analyzed trends identified in the last five annual Pinterest Trend Reports, mapping out their rise and fall over the previous 20 years to reveal the average lifecycle of interior design trends.
Our research also highlights the latest round of ‘in’ and ‘out’ trends in home decor, including a key custom framing trend for 2025 and beyond.
According to our research, based on Google search interest in interior themes, trends tend to be favored for just over 10 months before decreasing in popularity. However, this 10-month lifespan often isn’t linear and occurs in peaks and troughs.
Some popular trends from the last five years, such as metallic, rococo, and checkerboard decor, are so fleeting in popularity that they only gain interest for a month or two. The rococo interior design trend is known for its elegant and regal features, including silk and marble materials and ornate-framed artwork. After initially emerging as a popular interior trend in February 2005, this decor style was reported as a top contender in Pinterest’s 2025 report, but has failed to gain traction again.
On the other hand, some trends seen in recent years have significantly outlived the average 10-month lifecycle. Pinterest reported retro and eclectic decor as key rising trends in 2023, and maximalism in 2025, even though these interior design styles initially rose to popularity in 2004, 2005, and 2021 respectively (according to Google search interest). This shows the longevity of some of these broader decor themes.
The maximalist interior design trend is characterized by the ‘more is more’ philosophy. Some key features of the trend are bold colors and patterns, varying materials and textures, and statement art. The search interest for maximalist interior design first spiked in popularity in February 2021 and peaked three years later in February 2024, staying among the top interior choices for almost 1.5 years.
However, our research shows that maximalism is now on its way out and is gradually being replaced by more minimalist trends, such as quiet refinement, which focuses on elegant, comfortable, and individualistic designs.
As we’ve seen with maximalism, some interior design trends have a longer lifespan because they can adapt and evolve.
Trends that incorporate classic silhouettes, neutral colors, and natural materials often remain popular for longer, as they can all be easily updated to include modern finishes, making them more timeless.

Vintage:
One interior design trend that doesn’t seem to be disappearing anytime soon is vintage. Since the first spike in popularity over two decades ago, vintage interiors have been trending for almost 8 years (95 months).
The trend takes inspiration from previous eras, with a strong nostalgic appeal. This means it can be constantly refreshed for each generation and remain a top design choice while other fleeting trends come and go.
The current version of this design trend often centers around decor choices made in the early to mid-20th century. Fans of this interior style often incorporate traditional materials, such as velvet, tweed, and lace. Walls are also commonly decorated with antique mirrors, old framed paintings, and decorative plates. A vintage colour palette usually incorporates pastel and muted tones to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Mushroom:
Another popular interior design trend is mushroom decor, highlighted in Pinterest’s 2023 report based on in-app search interest and user engagement. As the name suggests, this trend involves incorporating mushroom-themed elements into your home. These can range from literal representations, such as lamps or wall art, to more discrete features, like color palettes and textures.
Mushroom interior design initially emerged as a trend in June 2006, before peaking in interest in March 2023. Despite a decrease in popularity since then, it has remained a top trend in Google search interest from homeowners researching decor, and has now been trending for over 3.5 years (44 months).
Biophilic:
Biophilic design is one of the biggest interior design trends, first emerging in April 2020 and peaking by February 2025. This trend, which is estimated to improve cognitive function and reduce stress levels by 15%, focuses on bringing nature and natural elements into indoor spaces to improve well-being, productivity, and air quality.

Mushroom:
Despite far outliving the average lifespan of most design trends, mushroom interiors have decreased in consumer interest the most over the last year, suggesting that the decor style’s reign may finally be coming to an end. Between May 2023 and April 2024, around 42,850 Google searches were made for the funghi-themed trend. But over the last year (May 2024 to April 2025), this figure had dropped to 28,510 - a decrease of a third (33.47%).
Maximalist:
Like mushroom interiors, the maximalist design trend is also beginning to decrease in popularity. Approximately 119,900 Google searches were made for the trend between May 2024 and April 2025. This is compared to 157,300 searches the previous year, showing a decrease of almost a quarter (23.78%). However, given the long-standing nature of this broader trend, we may yet see another resurgence in years to come.
Weirdcore:
The unique ‘weirdcore’ trend, influenced by fantasy and surrealism, saw the third-biggest decrease in consumer interest over the last year, dropping by over one-sixth (17.02%). Weirdcore interiors embrace an unconventional style, often incorporating psychedelic elements. The bold and quirky color schemes and furniture designs mean this trend has a more niche audience, contributing to its impending fall from popularity.

Cherry:
Cherry interior design has grown considerably over the last year, after first becoming popular over twenty years ago. Between May 2023 and April 2024, over 25,000 Google searches were made for the trend. By the following year, this figure had risen to 32,850, showing a surge of almost 31%.
The trend, which was recently revived thanks to the viral ‘unexpected red theory’2, uses the vibrant cherry red shade to draw attention and create a lively atmosphere. The hue is often used in moderation, as an accent color or statement wall decor frame, and paired with more neutral tones, such as white and grey. Cherry red works well with textures like velvet, leather, and wool, as they enhance the luxury feel of the color.
Vintage and vintage Americana:
‘Vintage Americana’ has also become more popular over the last year, with a 28.13% increase in searches. This interior style is inspired by America’s rich cultural heritage and history, combining the old and new.
One of the main aspects of the trend is rustic charm, meaning natural materials like wood are often used for decoration. Nostalgic features, such as old classic books, antiques, and vintage quilts or throws, are also incorporated. As the trend name suggests, a red, white, and blue color palette and star and stripe motifs are often used to nod to the American flag.
Vintage interiors more broadly are continuing to rise in popularity, showing how timeless the trend truly is. Between May 2024 and April 2025, around 521,500 Google searches were made for vintage interiors. Compared to 459,100 searches the previous year, we see an increase of almost one-sixth (13.59%).
Decorating the interior of a property is what transforms a house into a home. But, with a never-ending trend cycle, it can be hard to know where to start with your decor choices. Even though design trends often gain a lot of popularity, they can quickly become overdone and fall out of fashion, usually after 10 months of trending, based on our research.
No one wants to be left hating their decor less than a year after investing the time, effort, and money to redecorate, so it’s vital that you take the trend cycle with a pinch of salt and connect with what you love in interior design. One way to do this and to create a more timeless and unique look in your home is to invest in personalized decor.
For example, framed photos add some sentimental value to your home decor, but they are timeless and never go out of style. Collage picture frames, in particular, are a great way to showcase the special moments in your life, from engagements and weddings to graduations and newborn babies.
Another big trend around personalization in home decor is the rising use of AI. New technologies are paving the way for unique decor items; our AI Photo Editor allows you to transform your sentimental photos into artwork, including watercolors, charcoal sketches, cartoon or comic book-style images, and more.
This advanced level of personalization is trend-proof thanks to the individualism and sentimental value.
We began by using the five most recent versions of the Pinterest Trends Report to create a seed list of interior design trends.
Next, we used Google Trends to analyze the lifespan and popularity of each trend over the last 20 years (2004 onwards). Google Trends shows the relative search interest in a topic over time, and normalizes search data on a scale of 0 to 100, where:
Using this data, we identified the month in which each trend first spiked in popularity (score of 50 to 74), the month in which the search interest of each trend peaked (score of 100), and the number of months in which the trend was trending (score of 75 to 100).
Finally, we used Google Keyword Planner to discover the number of searches made worldwide for each trend between May 2023 and April 2024, and May 2024 and April 2025.
All data is correct as of 23 May 2025.
