DIY Art Projects for Non-Artists

Ideas for creating unique artwork you can preserve & display inside a custom frame

If you're looking to take on a summer project, either alone or with the whole family, this post has you covered.

It doesn't matter if you consider yourself crafty or not. These ideas should provide entertainment and result in something you can custom frame and enjoy on the wall at home or work.

Framing Silhouette Art

You've probably seen finished versions of this before, and maybe thought it requires too much artistic talent to try for yourself.

But all you need is a printed photo of your subject's profile, a pencil, paper and scissors.

First, cut out the shape of the profile with a pair of scissors or Exacto knife. Next, trace the profile's outline onto a piece of construction paper. Finally, cut that piece out and layer it on top of another piece of paper for contrast for the finished silhouette!

Once you are done, these are tailor made for our DIY picture framing kits. Enter the dimensions of the paper, customize your frame style, and we'll ship a handcrafted frame with everything you need to frame at home. The acid-free materials we use in all of the frames will protect the artwork from damage and fading over time.

This can be a really personalized art project, so don't be afraid to get creative with silhouettes of pets, or mixing and matching varying colors of construction paper together.

Typography Frame Up

This project requires little to zero artistic talent, and looks great in any work or living space.

There are some great resources for budget-friendly printable typography. Etsy is always a great place to look, especially since you can browse different stores to find exactly what you're looking for.

Once you find a digital file you like, it's super easy to upload it to our site so we can print and frame it for you!

If you're feeling especially artistic, go the extra mile by cutting out bold headlines from your favorite magazines or try your hand at calligraphy. Pick a single letter, word, or a full phrase that really stands out to you - the finished product can be a great addition to any room, or a unique, framed gift for anyone with a little wall space to spare.

Adult Coloring Book Pages

You may already have one of these books in your possession. It's no surprise that these were trending in a big way as easy indoor projects with the promise of lowering stress levels.

The pages of these coloring books are almost puzzle-like, in that they take a decent amount of concentration and patience (not to mention fine motor skills) to complete. But once complete, they could be worthy of a spot on your gallery wall.

A few or our favorites include: Enchanted Forest - Johanna Basford, The Mindfulness Coloring Book - Emma Farrarons, Outside the Lines - Various Artists, Curated by Souris Hong-Porretta.

Paper Mosaics

Paper mosaics have a slightly higher degree of difficulty (they require some planning), but look impressive when complete and are way more interesting than a run of the mill poster you may have considered framing.

What you'll need: something to glue your mosaic down on (regular paper or cardboard), colored construction or tissue paper, scissors and glue.

Once you've decided on an image and color palette, use a pencil to map out your outline. Cut up the colored paper into small, uneven bits and glue them down within your outlines. Leave some space between each "tile" or layer the pieces for a super-textured look.

Bonus tip: If you're going for something even more multi-dimensional, try painting different color gradients on pieces of paper before cutting them up and using them as your mosaic tiles.

The result? Unique artwork that will stand out and stay preserved inside the frame style of your choosing.

Not in the mood for scissors and glue?

Our collage picture frames let you frame multiple images separated by mat window openings, but you can also use a site like Be Funky, Canva or Fotor to create a single image collage out of your favorite photos.

There are tons of layouts to choose from, and all should work well as framed pictures. Whenever you frame your photo with us, we make sure that each image is printed to look its best.
