Frameworthy DIY Projects for the Non-Artist

With the tail end of autumn and all of winter ahead of us, there are sure to be plenty of days spent inside. If you're looking for something fun to do--alone or with the whole family--this post has got you covered. Whether or not you're historically crafty, these projects are guaranteed to keep everyone entertained during the cold months ahead and yield fun, frameable results that everyone will love.

Silhouette Art

You've probably seen finished versions of this before, and maybe thought they required too much artistic talent to try for yourself. Really, though, all you need is a printed photo of your subject's profile, a pencil, paper and scissors. First, cut the shape of your profile out of the paper it's printed on with a pair of scissors (or boxcutter for the pros). Next, trace the profile outline onto a piece of construction paper. Finally, cut that piece out then layer this on top of another piece of paper for contrast. Now you've got your finished silhouette! This can be a really personalized art project, so don't be afraid to get creative; make silhouettes of pets, or mix and match varying colors of construction paper together. Get as intricate (or not) as you'd like.

Typography

This project requires little to no artistic talent, and looks great in any work or living space. There are some great resources for budget-friendly printable typography. Etsy is always a great one, especially since you can browse different stores to find exactly what you're looking for. Once you find a digital file you like, it's super easy to upload it to our site so we can print and frame it for you!

And if you're feeling especially artistic, go the extra mile by cutting out bold headlines from your favorite magazines or try your hand at calligraphy. Pick a single letter, word, or a full phrase that really stands out to you. The finished product will be the perfect addition to any room, not to mention a great gift for anybody with a little wall space to spare.

Adult Coloring Book Pages

You may already have one of these books in your possession. They were trending in a big way for a while there, offering a huge variety of detailed images to color in, and promising to lower your stress levels at the same time. The pages of these coloring books are almost puzzle-like, in that they take a decent amount of concentration and patience (not to mention fine motor skills) to complete. Once they're done, though, they're definitely worthy of a spot on the wall. This activity is perfect for adults and children alike.

Here are a few of our favorites: Enchanted Forest - Johanna Basford, The Mindfulness Coloring Book - Emma Farrarons, Outside the Lines - Various Artists, Curated by Souris Hong-Porretta.

Paper Mosaic

Paper mosaics are not the simplest thing on this list (they require some planning), but they do look impressive when they're done. Here's what you'll need: something to glue your mosaic down on (regular paper or cardboard), colored construction or tissue paper, scissors and glue. Once you decide on an image and color palette, use a pencil to map out your outline. Cut up the colored paper into small, uneven bits and glue them down within your outlines. Leave some space between each "tile" or layer the pieces for a super-textured look.

Bonus tip: If you're going for something even more multi-dimensional, try painting different color gradients on pieces of paper before cutting them up and using them as your mosaic tiles.

Photo Collages

Not in the mood for scissors and glue? Use a site like Be Funky, Canva or Fotor to create a collage with your favorite photos. There are tons of layouts to choose from, and they all look great in a frame!
